LIGO Laboratory (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) seeks a highly motivated and skilled Science Educator to join its team.
This position is located in Richland, WA.
LIGO Laboratory is a National Science Foundation major facility dedicated to observing the newly discovered gravitational-wave universe.
Jointly operated by the California Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the LIGO Laboratory operates world-leading observatories near Richland, WA, and Baton Rouge, LA as well as R&D centers on the Caltech and MIT campuses.
The LIGO Laboratory's mission spans a broad and vibrant array of activities related to gravitational-wave physics and astronomy, including detector operations, R&D toward detector improvements, gravitational-wave astrophysics, observatory operations, and education and public outreach.
The mission of LIGO's education and public outreach group is to inspire a sense of wonder, to engage curiosity and to encourage and diversify the future STEM workforce.
At the LIGO Hanford Observatory this mission is supported by the new LIGO Exploration Center (LExC).

edu Job Summary LIGO Laboratory seeks a highly motivated and skilled Science Educator to join the outreach team at its LIGO Exploration Center located at the LIGO Hanford Observatory outside of Richland, Washington.
The successful candidate for this position will join a team of two other outreach staff members.
The outreach team is responsible for working with community members, educators, and LIGO scientists to continue, and advance, an active and innovative scientific and educational outreach program.
Essential Job Duties Time will be divided between three main categories of activities listed below.
Example duties for each activity are listed below.
These are example duties and not a comprehensive list.
Directly leading outreach programs:
Teach primary and secondary students about the physical science related to LIGO using interactive programs.
Facilitating teacher professional development.
Guiding field trips through the LIGO Exploration Center and Observatory.
Leading hands-on activities at local schools.
Staffing LIGO booth at community events.
Leading various tours including approximately once monthly public tours on Saturdays.
Staffing the front desk of the LIGO Exploration Center:
Powering on and testing exhibits.
Greeting and directing guests.
Answering visitor questions about LIGO Science.
Monitoring the exhibit hall.
Answering front desk phone.
Planning and logistical activities that support outreach programs:
Design Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) aligned lessons and activities that highlight LIGO science, engineering, and careers.
Design, organize, and evaluate programs such as field trips, teacher professional development, and public events.
Collaborate with personnel in partner institutions to develop and advance programs supporting our shared goals, to improve science education in Washington State and beyond.
Maintain and develop relationships with schools, teachers, and allied organizations to improve our programs and to overcome barriers to community members participation.
Design outreach materials such as outreach flyers and brochures.
Assist in preparation and setup for events hosted at the LIGO Exploration Center.
Other duties as assigned.
Occasional nights and weekends are required.
Basic Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Science, Engineering, Education, or a related field.

years working experience in an education or public science outreach environment.
Experience teaching science or engineering content with a hands-on approach to learning.
Reliable transport to and from observatory, local schools, and presentation venues.
Ability to work occasional nights and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications Masters degree, or equivalent experience, in Science, Engineering, Education, or a related field.

years working in an education or public science outreach environment is preferred.
Familiarity with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Experience with physical science.
Experience working with diverse populations.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
