Each year, we hire many Electrical & Control Systems Engineering interns. The total number of hires and start dates are subject to workload and business conditions. Locations will vary based on project needs, and include Frederick, MD, Houston, TX and Reston, VA, among others.
General Job Duties
Electrical & Control Systems Engineering interns may be responsible for:
- Preparing and reviewing calculations, drawings, specifications, plans and requisitions of structures, systems and equipment
- Reviewing design documents from equipment suppliers
- Power system layout and design
- Cost-effective selection of equipment and materials
- Grounding and lighting system design
- Motor data sheets
- Conducting computer aided design (CAD) & computer aided engineering (CAE)
- Review and input to process Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs) and system descriptions
- Prepare digital and analog (modulating) logic control design using computer control in a Distributed Control System (DCS) or Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) environment
- Design and specify various types of instruments (level, flow, temperature, pressure, analytical, etc.) and control valves
- Review package systems drawings
- Integrate Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) design and programming into overall plant controls
- Design DCS operating graphic displays, alarm management, and process reports
- Prepare control panel design and layouts
- Participate in DCS and PLC factory acceptance testing
- Select appropriate instrument installation details for various plant applications
- Prepare design change packages
- Travel may be required (domestic or international, business trip or short/long term assignment)

- Electrical/Control Systems: Design the electrical distribution systems for industrial facilities, power plants, or commercial facilities.
- Field/Construction: Facilitating build process on-site by modifying engineering documents to support a successful construction operation
- Plant Design & Piping: Reviewing & designing the placement of plant equipment, systems and piping to ensure optimal space utilization
- Project Estimating, Scheduling & Cost Control: Estimating costs of projects and developing project schedules by providing an objective view of project performance
- Startup & Facility Operations: Testing, calibrating and verifying mechanical and electrical equipment and systems on a project site to have it ready for turn on, with an operating manual
Basic Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a four-year Bachelor of Science degree program in Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited college or University
- Completed at least one year of undergraduate studies in Electrical Engineering or related field
- Possess the eligibility to work and remain in the U.S. without sponsorship
Preferred Qualifications
- Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited college or University, completed no later than Spring 2014 and no more than 12 months prior to Spring 2014
- Completed relevant coursework with a strong GPA
- Prior co-op or internship experience
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Course work or experience relating to control systems in one of the following areas:
- Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
- Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
- Control System Theory or Process Modeling
- Control Valve selection and design
- Nuclear Reactor Operations Training
- Process Instrumentation
- Analytical Instrumentation
- Human Machine Interface (HMI) or Human Factors Engineering
- Successfully passed or enrolled to take Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
